Hello and Welcome!

My name is Marti Weiler and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York, New Jersey, and Virginia. In this post I am going to answer a few of the most commonly asked questions that therapists get from prospective clients:

How does therapy work?

The process of therapy involves meeting regularly with a trained clinician who can offer you a new perspective and guide you as you learn how to navigate specific challenges. As a therapist, I provide a safe environment for you to be seen and heard without judgement. Our discussions will vary from week to week depending on your needs. In order for this process to be effective, clients actively participate, both on and off the (metaphorical) couch.

How does Teletherapy work?

As an Online Therapist, I meet with clients “face to face” on a secure video platform each week for 45 minutes. Logistically, you will need a device with a front-facing camera, an internet connection, and a private space where you can speak freely and won’t be interrupted for the duration of your session. The content discussed in therapy sessions remains confidential, and the number of visits will vary depending on each client’s circumstances.

How long have you been a therapist? What types of clients do you treat?

I have been a therapist since 2014. Before private practice, I worked in outpatient mental health, providing individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, and crisis intervention services to clients of all ages, genders, races, cultures, personalities, religions, socioeconomic statuses. Some of common issues that I treated at the clinic are: mood disorders, PTSD, career stress, financial stress, interpersonal stress, relationship issues, homelessness, personality issues, and substance abuse. These are just a few examples, but the list goes on.

I have been providing teletherapy in private practice since 2018. While I work mostly with young adults, women’s issues, and anxiety disorders, I also have a fair share of clients who land outside of these specializations.

What should I keep in mind when looking for a therapist?

As someone who has experienced the benefits both as a client and as a therapist, I have seen first hand the transformation that comes with commitment to the process. The most important factor for change in therapy is the relationship between clinician and client. I recommend requesting a brief consultation with a potential therapist before choosing to move forward.

How would you describe yourself and your therapeutic approach?

Just as with anyone else, each of us has our own style, personality, and way of relating to others. I have been described by my clients as being intuitive, direct, compassionate, and supportive. As a therapist, my approach is relational, warm, and with a touch of humor. I use a mix of modalities to tailor therapy to each specific client. The most common therapeutic interventions that I use stem from: Attachment-Based Therapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, and Behavioral Therapy.

What is the best part of the work for you?

As therapists, we are here to guide you, but you are the ones doing the heavy lifting. When a client can look back at the transformation they have made and really own their strengths, that is the best part of my job. This looks very different for each client, so that’s as specific as I can get!
