Online Therapy

Online Therapy

Just like traditional, in-person therapy, participating in therapy online is still “face-to-face” and your privacy is protected with the use of an encrypted HIPAA compliant platform. As long as you have a front facing camera on your phone, tablet, or computer, you can take advantage of online counseling. Most clients appreciate the ease of access, avoiding commute time, parking issues, having to take time out of work and/or finding child care. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York and Virginia, I am only able to provide online therapy for to folks who live in those states.

Is Online Therapy Effective?

Yes! Research shows that doing psychotherapy remotely is just as effective as meeting in-person. Many people can benefit from psychotherapy delivered remotely. In addition to the convenience and flexibility that online therapy offers, dealing with anxiety and depression, navigating life transitions, resolving career questions, and working through relationship issues can all be accomplished using phone and video technology. Sometimes in-person check-ins will be indicated, especially during times of high stress. If I determine that continuing to work in this way is no longer appropriate, we will discuss it and create a new plan of action.

is online therapy right for me?

Online therapy may not be a good option for those who are unable to regularly keep themselves safe or care for themselves, as is the case for people with psychosis, memory impairment, and severe substance abuse. Individuals who struggle to manage with the intensity of their negative emotions like anger, hurt, fear, or sadness, or those who have active suicidal urges might not be appropriate for remote psychotherapy.

Do I need special software or equipment?

Online sessions are offered using a secure video conferencing platform that allows us to see one another while we work. I use a service called Secure Video, which is HIPAA-compliant and does not require anything more than a web browser and camera. Sessions are not downloaded or saved to your computer or mine, and you do not need to sign up for an account to use it.

If you are interested in learning more about phone and video options for psychotherapy, please complete a phone consultation request, and I'll be in touch soon!
